Isle of Wight 2014

A weekend music festival wasn't really on my radar as we knew we had Cyprus and Paris early in the year...however, when Ben (not my Ben, his friend Ben, confusingly) invited us to Isle of Wight, barely had we considered it when he followed up with 'got you guys tickets'. So, Isle of Wight it was.

We got a hotel Wednesday night so that we'd be first on the ferry, since Isle of Wight festival staff don't let you into the camp sites until 12.00, this proved to be slightly ambitious, but nevertheless, we ended up with a pretty sweet campsite, and went off to explore the festival in the sun - we really lucked out with the weather! Stopping off first for shisha at 'Hey Joe's', some delicious cocktails at Whisky Sessions where you can also listen to some folksy bands and then, later, we hit the silent disco.

And joined the longest conga line ever! I love silent disco - it's so much fun! This one had three different DJs each playing some serious throwback tunes. It was hard to pick a favourite station!

The next day was gorgeous weather again, but, having been caught off guard on our first day, some of us were a little burnt so we spent part of the day trying to find shade and part of the day making the most of the weather....

Don't we look a cheery bunch...sadly, we were not too pleased at this particular moment, we were caught in some kind of cattle gate situation and we couldn't access most of the festivals until certain times...turned out it was something to do with local schools in the area and loud music not being able to be played before 14.00 or something...either way, see those people in the background? That's the queue for the only open bar. No, we were not happy.

Not surprisingly then we were first at the bar in Whisky Sessions (OK, yes, we went there a lot, you would too if you tried their Ginger Mojito...I would swim back for one of them, you know, if the bar were still there). Anyway, we were happy once again...especially when we found Octopus' Garden...

Damn, if only my cup were a little to the left here, I could've had Ben in a cup. Missed opportunity.

We parked ourselves in front of the stage for the rest of the day until Calvin Harris ended the night.

The next day brought showers but we were well prepared.

Which turned out to be unnecessary because it was sunny again a half hour later.

I dragged the girls to see Cher Lloyd, which turned out (probably not surprisingly) to be pretty disappointing as she kept plugging her new album and didn't sing Swagger Jagger!! Never mind, we went and caught the Hoosiers on the small beach stage before heading back to the main stage to enjoy the Chili Peppers.

On Sunday, we heard tales of a surprise guest from the guy who manned the unclimbable ladder. It turned out to be very unexpected!

Red arrows! I've never seen an air show or any air stunts at all before, so this was absolutely amazing to me! Loved it!

Kings of Leon closed out the festival, leaving us with the arduous task of getting all our stuff back to the car on Monday. We were forced to use creative means of carrying.

Safety note: requires a strong neck. So, Isle of Wight, on the whole is a pretty damn good festival. It reminds me of Glastonbury on a smaller scale, good crowd, good food (mostly) and amazing entertainment. I'd go back if they had particularly good bands on I wanted to see, or if I didn't get a Glastonbury ticket!

And now, for your entertainment...all of us on mechanical bulls....
